Law 13/89, which was followed by Ministerial Decree 236/89, was the first to lay down rules and requirements regarding the elimination of architectural barriers. On this basis, in the following years, further laws have further outlined the situation with the aim of improving the accessibility of buildings, including hotels and all hotel facilities in general. The law provides that the number of accessible rooms is equal to 2 for every 40 or fraction of 40 rooms of the entire accommodation facility, increased by another 2 for every 40 or fraction of 40.
Offering accessible rooms in its own structure is not an addiction, it actually means showing awareness in a world that needs to pay more attention to a formula of widespread accessibility.
In order to offer a high level service of tourist accommodation, it is necessary to design accessible rooms that do not just comply with regulations; the formula “Design for All” must be followed also in the hospitality field.
Design and research for the details in a hotel, must go hand in hand with the accessible tourism’s needs.
The accessible tourism is a concept that involves everybody: it refers to different category of users, including elderly people.
Some new principles are introduced by the Ministerial Decree n°236. A facility is considered “accessible” only when someone can enjoy all its environments; it is therefore considered “visitable” when the host can make full use of the services offered.
With regard to accessibility in hotels, B&B and hotel facilities in general, the bathroom is the environment in which there are more challenges to be solved.
The suitable design of a bathroom in a hotel should not just comply with the law, but also with a widespread need: each host may require different solutions; the hotel should then consider an inclusive approach.
This is what hotels should focus on, which can be summarized as: looking for the maximum comfort level provided in the accommodation facility.
A top goal in Goman is to design and create free barriers stylish bathrooms addressed to hotels, B&B and hotel facilities in general.
There should not be differences between an accessible and a “normal” room. Accessible tourism requires attention both on design and elegance.
Goman designs bathrooms, according to the formula “Design for All”, which are functional, nice and adaptable to the needs; thanks to the technicians’ experience in the design field, it also proposes solutions provided with removable aids, suitable for disabled people.
We do no more talk about “rooms dedicated to disabled people”, but “accessible rooms”: rooms and bathrooms designed for everybody.
