Bathrooms and Aids
for public places

From 1989 to the present day, the law has increasingly protected the issue of accessibility. For a modern society, it is a duty to recognize equal rights also for those with reduced mobility, whether they are disabled, elderly or have other forms of disability.

ACCESSIBLE DESIGN

The standard provides for the design criteria for accessibility for both new construction and renovation and concerns:

  • Social Structures (educational, health, welfare, cultural and sports).
  • Buildings that are the headquarters of companies or enterprises subject to compulsory placement.
  • Residences (residential units that can be visited).
  • Rooms and venues for meetings, shows and catering.
  • Accommodation.
  • Places of worship.
  • Other places open to the public.

In addition to certain design criteria, bathrooms for people with disabilities are considered to be an obligation that must be fulfilled under certain conditions. The criteria are specified in the relevant points in the regulations. Bathrooms for the disabled are always considered mandatory, they must be easily accessible even by people with reduced or impeded mobility as comfortable and easy accessibility to at least one toilet must be allowed.

Disabled toilets for bars and restaurants

The establishments that, by their nature, need support in the design of accessible bathrooms are undoubtedly bars and restaurants. The legislation states that when the bathroom for the disabled is mandatory, there must be at least two bathrooms distinguished according to gender. It is possible to integrate and adapt the disabled toilet into an existing bathroom that of course meets the accessibility requirements. This is where the third principle comes into play: adaptability. A bathroom for the disabled can be the result of an adaptation of an existing bathroom.

Restaurants, bars and public places in historic centres can benefit from an exemption from the regulations on bathrooms for the disabled only in the event that there are structural impediments that do not allow the construction of toilets for the disabled.
